Background of the Study
Teenage pregnancy is a major public health concern, particularly in developing countries like Nigeria, where high rates of adolescent childbearing are linked to negative health and social outcomes. Beyond the physical risks, teenage pregnancy significantly affects the psychological well-being of young mothers. Many adolescent mothers experience anxiety, depression, stress, and low self-esteem due to societal judgment, lack of emotional support, and the abrupt transition into motherhood (WHO, 2024).
In Niger State, where early marriages and teenage pregnancies are prevalent, the psychological toll on adolescent mothers is often overlooked. Many teenage girls face social exclusion, school dropout, and economic hardship, which contribute to emotional distress. The lack of access to mental health services further exacerbates these issues, as psychological support for teenage mothers remains inadequate.
Research has shown that teenage mothers are more prone to postpartum depression and stress-related disorders compared to older mothers (UNICEF, 2024). Factors such as family rejection, partner abandonment, and financial insecurity contribute to their mental health struggles. Given the rising concern over teenage pregnancies in Niger State, it is crucial to assess the psychological impact on adolescent mothers to develop effective interventions that support their mental well-being.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing focus on maternal health, the psychological impact of teenage pregnancy remains underexplored in Niger State. Many teenage mothers face emotional distress, yet there are limited mental health services tailored to their needs. Social stigma, family rejection, and economic challenges further intensify their psychological burden, leading to long-term mental health consequences (UNFPA, 2024).
Teenage mothers often struggle with feelings of shame, guilt, and anxiety about their future. Additionally, the pressure of balancing motherhood with limited education and financial resources increases their vulnerability to mental health disorders. Given that adolescent mental health is critical to overall well-being, there is an urgent need to assess the psychological impact of teenage pregnancy and identify strategies to support young mothers in Niger State.
